There isn’t one Gmail switch that always means “turn off Gemini.” The right control depends on what you see, who owns the account and whether you want to stop Gmail smart features, Workspace-wide smart features, or Gemini access set by an administrator. Name the unwanted behavior before changing anything.

Match the control to the behavior

For a personal account, Gmail documents two related settings. Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet affects app-level experiences such as Smart Compose and Smart Reply. Smart features in Google Workspace affects experiences that use Workspace content across products, including Gemini in Workspace. They are separate choices.

You want to stop Start by checking What it does not prove
Suggested typing or quick reply in Gmail Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet That Gemini in every Workspace app is unavailable
Gemini features that use Workspace content across products Smart features in Google Workspace That a company administrator has removed a service-level feature
A feature for a work or school group The admin console and your organization’s policy That an individual user can override the organization’s setting

Don’t use browser extensions to hide an icon as a substitute for a privacy or access setting. Hiding an element says nothing about account access or data handling.

Worked example: remove an unwanted Workspace feature without breaking reply suggestions

Starting point: Maya uses a personal Gmail account. She wants to stop Gemini from using Workspace content across Google products, but she still wants Smart Reply in email.

In Gmail on a computer, Maya opens Settings, then See all settings. Under General, she finds Google Workspace smart features and chooses Manage Workspace smart feature settings. She turns off Smart features in Google Workspace and saves. She leaves Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet on.

Check the result: Gmail’s own help says the Workspace setting controls cross-product experiences that include Gemini in Workspace; the Gmail/Chat/Meet setting is separate. Maya reloads Gmail, opens a non-sensitive test message and confirms that the unwanted Workspace feature has stopped while Smart Reply remains available.

Correction when the result surprises you: If Smart Reply also disappears, Maya changed the Gmail/Chat/Meet setting as well. She restores only that setting, saves, then repeats the test. Record the before-and-after state rather than guessing which checkbox changed what.

When an administrator owns the setting

A work or school account can look similar to a personal inbox but follows different rules. Google documents service-level Gemini controls for eligible Workspace editions. An administrator with the Gemini Settings privilege can go to Generative AI → Gemini for Workspace → Feature access, select the service, then set it on or off for the relevant organization unit or configuration group.

That control can apply to Gmail, Docs and other Workspace services. Google also warns that turning Gemini off in one app does not necessarily prevent someone from asking about that app’s data through Gemini in another app. If the goal is to limit a data route, test the route itself and ask the administrator which controls apply.

A short change record for support requests

Send a precise ticket when you don’t own the setting:

Account type: work or school Google account
Product: Gmail on web
Observed feature: [name the button, summary or side panel]
Desired change: turn off Gemini feature access for Gmail for [group]
Constraint: keep [named smart feature] unchanged if policy allows
Verification: test with a non-sensitive thread after the change

Avoid pasting mail content or customer data into the ticket. A screenshot with redacted information is usually enough to identify the interface.

Questions about turning off Gemini in Gmail

Will turning off Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet turn off Gemini across Workspace?

No. Google documents this as a separate setting from Smart features in Google Workspace. Check the behavior you want to stop before choosing a setting.

Why can’t I find the Workspace setting in Gmail?

Account type, feature availability, region and organization policy can differ. On a work or school account, ask the administrator which controls the organization manages.

Can a Workspace administrator switch Gemini off only for Gmail?

For supported editions, Google documents service-level Feature access controls that include Gmail. The administrator can apply a setting to everyone or a selected organizational unit or configuration group.

Does turning off a Gmail setting delete existing email data?

No. A setting changes future availability of the related experience. It is not a mail-deletion action; use Gmail’s normal retention and deletion controls for email itself.
