The safest first writing task is not “write the article.” Give AI a draft you understand and one editing job you can evaluate: tighten a paragraph, reorganize an explanation or identify unsupported claims.
Choose the function before the tool
| Writing job | Provide | Ask for | Do not delegate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restructure | Existing draft and reader goal | A new order with reasons | Which facts are true |
| Tighten | Paragraph and meaning to preserve | Shorter version plus change notes | Approval of removed nuance |
| Clarify | Confusing passage and audience | Plain-language alternative | Subject expertise |
| Source check | Draft and source pack | Claim-to-source table | Verification without opening sources |
Send a bounded revision request
Revise the passage below for a reader who is new to the topic.
KEEP:
- every factual claim and qualification;
- the author's first-person observation;
- the example and its source marker.
CHANGE:
- shorten sentences longer than 30 words;
- replace abstract nouns where a direct verb works;
- remove repeated setup.
RETURN:
1. revised passage;
2. change log;
3. any sentence whose meaning may have shifted.
PASSAGE:
[paste text]Compare rather than accept
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Meaning | Did a qualification or condition disappear? |
| Evidence | Did the revision strengthen a claim beyond its source? |
| Voice | Does it still sound like this author and publication? |
| Utility | Is the result easier for the reader to use? |
Keep the original visible. Accept changes individually when the stakes or the writing are important.
Can AI preserve my writing voice?
It can imitate patterns from examples, but you still need to compare the result. Give it a small set of writing samples you are allowed to use and describe observable traits instead of asking for a vague “brand voice.”
When should I not use AI for a draft?
Avoid sharing material you are not permitted to upload. For sensitive, regulated or high-stakes writing, follow the organization’s approved tools and review process rather than assuming a general writing workflow is sufficient.
How do I check whether a revision changed the meaning?
Compare the draft and revision sentence by sentence for claims, qualifiers, dates and commitments. Reject a smoother sentence when it strengthens evidence the source does not provide.
