Study Mode changes the conversation from “give me an answer” to a guided exchange. It can ask questions, break a concept into steps and check your understanding. It is still ChatGPT: explanations can be wrong, and the feature does not know your course rules unless you provide them.

Start Study Mode

According to OpenAI’s current help page, Study Mode is available in regular ChatGPT conversations on web, iOS and Android. On web, choose Study and learn from the tools menu or mention @study; on mobile, open the tools menu with the plus button and choose the study option. It is not currently used inside Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects.

Product controls can change. If the option is missing, consult the current help page rather than following an old screenshot.

Give it a useful starting packet

Before the first question, provide four things:

Input Example
Goal Explain why confidence intervals widen with smaller samples
Level Introductory statistics
Source The assigned textbook passage or lecture notes
Attempt My explanation focuses only on the mean

Then say what kind of help you want: one question at a time, a hint before an explanation, or a short quiz after the concept.

Keep the session active

Answer each question before reading further. If Study Mode moves too quickly, ask it to return to the first step you cannot explain. If it states a rule that is not in the material, ask which passage supports it and open that passage yourself.

Use a simple session record: misconception, corrected rule, source passage and a new example. This is more useful than copying the whole transcript.

End with an independent check

Ask for a new problem without a solution. Close the explanation, solve the problem and compare your reasoning with the source. If you can only reproduce the exact worked example, change the context or numbers and try again.

Study Mode can structure practice; it cannot determine whether you understand the subject. A successful session ends with something you can do without the chat.

Frequently asked questions

Does Study Mode guarantee correct answers?

No. OpenAI’s own guidance says it can make mistakes. Verify important explanations against course sources and ask an instructor when the material conflicts.

Is Study Mode different from a study prompt?

Study Mode supplies a guided product experience. A study prompt can reproduce parts of the method in a normal chat. The learning quality still depends on your attempt, sources and independent check.

Should I upload all my course files?

No. Upload only relevant material you are allowed to share. A small, named source set is easier to check and reduces unnecessary exposure.
