A genuinely free AI course lets you finish the stated learning material without payment. A preview, trial or preparation path for a paid exam is a different offer. Check the account, assessment and credential boundary before you commit study time.

A checked starting list

The following official pages were reviewed on September 20, 2026. Terms can change, so reopen the linked provider page before enrolling.

Program What the official page currently allows Practice and proof Friction to expect
OpenAI Academy Courses are free globally for people with a ChatGPT account Each course has an assessment. A score of 80% or higher plus course completion earns the matching badge; eligible full pathways can issue a completion certificate Progress and badges stay with the email used for Academy, and accounts cannot currently be merged
Google Machine Learning Crash Course Public modules can be opened without buying a course Quizzes, interactive exercises and Colab programming exercises cover ML rather than general workplace prompting Programming exercises are most thoroughly tested on desktop Chrome and Firefox
IBM SkillsBuild IBM describes the catalog as free and lets visitors try selected courses as guests Registration opens progress tracking and eligible digital credentials Guest access demonstrates the lesson format but not every catalog or credential flow
Microsoft Learn The AI hub provides self-directed modules and role routes Knowledge checks and product-specific learning paths vary by module Microsoft credentials and exams have separate requirements; the catalog can feel broad without a role filter

OpenAI Academy badges and pathway completion certificates are not certifications. Microsoft learning modules do not make a separate certification exam free. Keep those labels in your notes because provider pages often place courses and credentials close together.

Run a seven-minute access check

Do this before comparing curriculum quality. Start a timer, open the official course page in a private browser window and record what happens at each boundary.

Check Evidence to save Fail condition
Start First lesson opens, or the exact account requirement appears Only a marketing preview opens
Continue A later module or syllabus confirms the rest of the route Payment appears before the advertised learning can be completed
Practice Exercise, quiz or project instructions are visible “Hands-on” means only watching a demonstration
Finish Completion rule and assessment threshold are stated The page does not explain what counts as completion
Credential Badge, certificate of completion and certification are named accurately A paid exam or verified certificate appears only after enrollment

Save the URL and date. If enrollment requires a card, a limited trial or an organization invitation, the offer does not belong in your “finish free” column.

Choose by the artifact you need

If your goal is using AI at work, finish with a reviewed workflow: source packet, prompt, first result, corrections and final result. If your goal is machine learning, produce a small notebook or written explanation of a model decision. If your goal is a credential, check whether the employer or program you care about recognizes that issuer and assessment.

Worked route A: workplace AI without coding

Starting point: a project coordinator can use a chatbot but cannot consistently turn meeting notes into a reliable recap.

Week 1: complete introductory material on prompting and responsible use. Write an expected answer before each exercise.

Week 2: use the same fictional meeting packet with three prompt versions. Record omissions and unsupported commitments.

Week 3: build a reusable recap template and test missing owners, conflicting dates and unapproved suggestions.

Week 4: ask a colleague to review the final artifact without seeing the prompt. Revise the instructions from their findings.

Result: the learner leaves with a course record and a work sample that shows input, method, failure and correction. The sample proves applied skill that a completion screen cannot show by itself.

Worked route B: technical ML foundations

Starting point: a learner knows Python syntax but cannot explain why a model overfits.

Use Google MLCC in module order. Complete the interactive exercise and programming task for the selected concept, save the Colab notebook, then write a short note explaining which parameter changed and what happened to training and validation behavior. A copied notebook is not enough; the explanation is the reviewable artifact.

If Colab or a programming exercise is uncomfortable on a phone, move that part to desktop. Switching devices is better than choosing a less suitable course merely because every screen fits mobile.

Troubleshoot the common access traps

  • You finished the videos but received no badge. Check whether the assessment passed, the activity was marked complete and the matching learning path was enrolled. OpenAI Academy documents all three as separate completion steps.
  • A provider says “enroll for free.” Open the payment and graded-assessment terms. The enrollment button alone does not prove the whole course or credential is free.
  • The course opens, but the lab asks for another product. Record the product plan, credit or workspace requirement as part of the real cost.
  • The catalog is overwhelming. Pick one artifact first, then reject every course whose exercises do not produce it.
  • A credential matters for school or work. Ask that institution what it recognizes before spending weeks on the path.

Avoid these traps

  • “Free to enroll” may still gate graded work or the certificate.
  • “Financial aid available” is not the same as automatic free access.
  • Free preparation does not make the external exam free.
  • A completion certificate is not automatically a professional certification.
  • A long catalog is not a learning path; choose one outcome and one artifact.

Use the AI beginner path when you need an ordered introduction. Use the AI certification guide when the credential itself is the main decision.

Questions about free AI courses

Can I learn AI for free as a beginner?

Yes. Start with one official foundation course and pair it with a small practice artifact. Programming is not required for every AI-at-work course, though technical ML paths may expect math or code.

Does a free course include a free certificate?

Not always. Check the assessment and issuance terms. Some providers offer a badge or completion certificate; others charge for an exam or verified credential.

Is a free trial a free course?

No. A trial has a time limit and may convert to paid access. Record the renewal date and cancellation terms before starting.

How many courses should I take at once?

One structured path is usually enough until you can produce and review the target artifact. Add another course only for a specific gap.

What should I save after a free course?

Keep the syllabus URL, completion record and one artifact that shows the task, first attempt, review and correction. Remove private data before using the artifact in a portfolio.
