Use Claude at work for a task whose source, output and reviewer you can name. A safe first job is drafting a recap from approved notes. “Help run the project” is too broad because it hides the data boundary and the person accountable for the result.

Start with a work-task intake card

Fill this card before opening Claude:

Field Example
Job Draft a weekly project recap
Permitted source Approved meeting notes and current action register
Output Decisions, actions, owners, dates and open questions
Forbidden inference Do not turn a suggestion into a decision
Reviewer Project lead
Stop condition Conflicting dates, personal data or an action with no accountable owner

Plan, retention and administrator controls differ. Check the current Anthropic documentation and your employer’s rules before placing company material in any AI product. A convenient upload button is not permission.

Worked example: notes to reviewed recap

Source packet: “The team approved Option B. Maya will send the QA report Friday. A customer email was suggested but not approved. The next meeting will follow the QA report; no date was set.”

Ask Claude:

Turn these approved notes into Decisions, Actions and Open questions.
Use only the notes. Keep suggestions separate from decisions.
For every action show owner and deadline. Write “Not assigned” or
“Not set” when a field is missing. Quote the supporting sentence after
each item. Do not send messages or assign work.

The acceptable result records Option B as the decision, Maya and Friday as the assigned action, the customer email as an open question, and the next meeting date as not set. If the draft says “Send the customer email,” the correction is specific: “Move the email to Open questions and mark the owner not assigned.” Then recheck every row, not only the one that failed.

Compare the draft with an expected answer

Before sending the notes, write this check in your own document. It prevents a fluent recap from becoming its own source of truth.

Item Expected answer Review action
Option B Approved decision Confirm the source uses “approved”
QA report Maya; Friday Keep the owner and relative date as written; ask for the calendar date if the recap will be archived
Customer email Suggested, not approved Move to Open questions
Next meeting After QA report; date not set Do not schedule it from the draft

Suppose Claude writes “Maya will send the customer email on Friday.” That blends two source sentences into a false action. The fix is not merely to replace the name; delete the unsupported action, keep the QA report under Actions, and ask the project lead who owns the proposed email. Rerun the same notes after revising the instruction so you can see whether the error recurs.

Decide whether the task belongs in Claude

A draft is a good candidate when the source is approved, the outcome can be checked against it, and a person has time to review before anything is sent. If the team needs a legally binding interpretation, personnel decision, payment approval or automatic update to a system of record, use the responsible workflow instead of treating Claude’s answer as the decision.

For repeatable work, write down what happens outside the chat: who provides the notes, who resolves conflicts, where the approved recap is stored and who may send it. A prompt alone is not an operating procedure.

Choose chat, Projects or Cowork by scope

Use a normal chat for one bounded source packet. Use Claude Projects when several conversations need the same maintained knowledge and instructions. Use Claude Cowork only when the job needs multi-step file or app access and the permissions, rollback and monitoring match the risk.

The larger surface is not automatically better. More access creates more ways for the wrong file, instruction or action to enter the task.

Use this quick rule: one source packet and one draft belong in chat; recurring source material belongs in a Project only after somebody maintains it; file moves, connector actions and multi-step execution require Cowork permissions and a rollback plan. Anthropic’s controls and data terms vary by plan and organization, so an administrator should confirm access and retention before any real work material is connected.

Test the repeatable version

Run the same instruction on four fictional packets: complete notes, missing owner, conflicting dates and an unapproved request to send a message. Mark each result pass only when the draft preserves source status and stops where approval is missing. Ask the project lead to review one packet without seeing Claude’s answer first; disagreement between the expected answer and the draft is a failure to investigate, not a stylistic preference.

Keep a dated revision record with the source, expected facts, first draft, correction and final approval. Remove personal information before sharing the example outside the team.

Common failures and fixes

  • The prompt starts with tone. Add the source, output fields and forbidden inferences before asking for style.
  • Unknowns disappear. Require explicit labels for missing owner, date and approval.
  • A draft becomes a decision. Name the human reviewer and block language such as “approved” unless the source uses it.
  • The task quietly expands. Stop when Claude needs a new system, folder or data category that was not in the intake card.

Questions about Claude for work

Can I use confidential company information?

Only when your organization has approved the product, plan, purpose and data category. Use fictional or sanitized material for practice.

Does a Team or Enterprise plan remove the need for review?

No. Organization controls can change access and retention, but they do not establish that a draft is factually complete or authorized.

What is the best first work task?

Choose a reversible draft with a visible source and a reviewer, such as a recap, outline or comparison table. Avoid approvals, payments and personnel decisions.

How do I know the workflow is ready to repeat?

Test normal, missing, conflicting and out-of-scope inputs. Publish the whole route to approval, including the manual review and stop condition.
