Choose AI tools for designers by the file you need to deliver. ChatGPT Images or Adobe Firefly can supply a concept image; Photoshop gives you selection-based editing, while Figma’s First Draft creates editable design starting points. A generated image and an editable layout solve different parts of the job.

Compare products by what you need to change

This comparison uses official product documentation checked on September 21, 2026. It is a task-fit guide, not a hands-on benchmark or a quality ranking. The last column gives the production check we recommend for that task.

Product Documented capability When to try it Check before choosing
ChatGPT Images Generate images and request edits in conversation You want to explain and revise a concept in ordinary language Inspect the whole image after an edit; OpenAI says changes can extend beyond the selected area.
Adobe Firefly Generate images from a text description You need several visual directions for a supplied brief Check the selected model and available controls; the exported image still needs to fit the final layout.
Photoshop Generative Fill Generate or replace content within a selection You already have an image and need a localized change Compare the boundary, lighting and neighboring details with the original.
Figma First Draft Turn a description into editable wireframes or designs You need a starting point for an interface layout Inspect the actual layers and replace provisional choices with your components and styles.

Start in the editor you already use when the job is mostly arranging approved assets. For an interface, editable components matter more than a realistic picture of a screen. For a photograph, the ability to correct one region may matter more than generating another full composition.

Match the design job to its review

Design job Useful tool category What still needs review
Explore a visual direction Text-to-image generator Subject, composition, unwanted text and rights
Remove one approved distraction Generative or conventional photo editor The full frame and protected details
Build a campaign layout Layout editor with AI assistance Type, grid, contrast, responsive exports and brand assets
Inspect a product scene Reference comparison and human review Visible features, labels, claims and scale

Run the same test before choosing

Use this fictional webinar-card brief to test a candidate. The geometry and sample copy below are exercise specifications, not observed output from any product.

DELIVERABLE: 1200 x 628 px webinar card, plus an editable source file.
COPY: "Build a clearer client handoff"
SUBTITLE: "A practical workshop for small studios"
VISUAL: One orange glass loop on the right, dark background.
LAYOUT: Keep the left half quiet enough for the headline.
EXCLUSIONS: No generated words, logos, extra objects or dates.

In ChatGPT Images or Firefly, request only the visual. Keep the headline out of the generation prompt so it remains editable later:

Create a wide dark image for a webinar card. Place one orange glass loop
in the right third, with soft light around the object. Keep the entire
left half plain and dark for separate text. No letters, logos or numbers.
Keep the object fully inside the frame, including its glow.

Choose the available wide format closest to the intended crop. Then place the image in a 1200 × 628 frame in your layout editor; this final frame, rather than the prompt alone, determines the export size.

Add the headline and subtitle as real text layers. For this exercise, use 64 px outer margins, a 520 px text area and a visual zone beginning at x=680. These are a starting layout, not a universal design standard. If the image arrives with a centered object, move or crop the image to the right only if the complete loop still fits.

The result should be an editable card with separate image, headline and subtitle layers. Export a preview and inspect it at 600 × 314 as well as full size. You should still be able to read the headline, see the complete loop and change the subtitle without regenerating the visual.

Repair the failed part instead of restarting everything

Failure in the exercise Next action Why this is the relevant change
Glow crosses the headline Move the art or request a darker left side The composition failed; the copy does not need rewriting.
The loop is cropped Reduce its scale or generate more surrounding space A larger export cannot restore missing content.
Fake lettering appears on the object Request removal, then inspect the entire result The brief excludes lettering; cropping may leave fragments.
Headline cannot be edited Replace baked-in text with a text layer Text changes should not depend on another image generation.
A local edit changes a nearby detail Compare with the original and repair the region in an editor Do not accept an unrelated change just because the requested edit succeeded.

If you choose Photoshop for a localized repair, select the intended region and use Generative Fill, then compare the variation with the original. A successful fill should fix the distraction without creating a new seam. If the original object must remain exact, keep it on its own layer and work on the background instead of regenerating the whole scene.

Run a separate test for interface work

The webinar image does not test an interface-design tool. To evaluate Figma First Draft, use a different brief: “Create a desktop workshop registration screen with a title, date, email field and a registration button.” Confirm that you can edit the resulting text and layout, then apply your existing components.

Test a long workshop title, an error message and a narrow screen. A visually complete first draft may still lack these states. If rebuilding the output around your design system takes longer than starting from an existing screen, use the existing screen.

Keep the AI graphic design guide for the broader production workflow, or use the AI image guide to refine the visual prompt.

Limits that matter

No general tool list can promise current plan limits, ownership terms or commercial suitability. Check each provider’s live documentation before connecting a paid account or publishing an asset. Keep source files, prompts and approval notes with the final export.

Before paying, confirm that your account can export the required size and format, share the editable file with collaborators and use the chosen feature within its credit allowance. Record the model as well as the application name when the app offers several models. Do not upload client material until you have checked the relevant workspace and data terms.

For a small trial, record one initial generation and one correction attempt. Count the manual cleanup and failed outputs too. Choose the tool that leaves you with a usable handoff for this brief; a striking first preview is only part of that result.

Questions about AI tools for designers

Is one AI tool enough for the entire design process?

Usually not. Concepting, precise layout, photo correction and final approval need different controls.

How should I compare products fairly?

Use the same approved brief, output size and review criteria. Record the date and plan level because product controls change.

When should I use manual design first?

Start manually when exact type, brand components, legal copy or precise production files dominate the task.
