AI photo editing is useful when the edit has a narrow job. Ask to remove one distraction, adjust light, or extend a background. If the request changes a person’s identity, a product’s features, or the factual setting of an image, stop and decide whether the new picture could mislead someone.
Finish with: the original, edited file, exact edit request, review result and a note of anything that changed outside the request.
Lock the parts that must survive
Before you open an editor, write a short preservation list. A property listing photo may need the room layout, fixed fixtures and window count unchanged. A team event photo may need each person recognisable and the number of people unchanged. This list makes a good prompt possible because it tells the tool what the edit may not reinterpret.
Run a full before-and-after check
Suppose a fictional café photo has a crumpled paper cup on an otherwise clear table. Use this request:
Edit the supplied photo. Remove only the crumpled paper cup on the front-left table.
Preserve every person, table, chair, window, sign, camera angle, crop and lighting.
Do not add objects, text or new people. Keep the same aspect ratio. The desired result has the cup gone and every protected item still present. Check at full size, then at the size where the image will appear. If the tool alters a face, changes lettering or replaces a chair, reject it. Try a tighter selection or a smaller change instead of asking it to repair an edit you cannot verify.
Choose the method by the risk
Use a local correction when a small visible flaw needs removal. Use a crop or conventional adjustment when exposure or framing is the problem. A generative change fits a background extension or an invented visual treatment, provided the result does not need to document reality. For a news image, record, legal evidence or product claim, keep the original and follow the rules of the publisher or organisation.
Keep an edit record
Save the source file, output, date, tool, exact request and reviewer decision together. If provenance information is available, inspect it; it can help trace an asset, but it does not replace your own review of what the image says.
Questions about AI photo editing
Can AI edit only the selected object?
Not reliably in every image. Editing tools can alter nearby pixels, so inspect the whole frame and reject changes outside the approved area.
Can I edit a photo of another person?
Get the permission and follow the policy that applies to the image and its intended use. Do not create a result that falsely represents what a person did, wore or said.
What belongs in the handoff folder?
Keep the original, edited version, request, intended use and review note. That record lets a later editor understand what changed and why.
